Will you be taking your pooch on a special outing today? Or maybe you are going to commit to getting out on more regular walks? Trust me, you won’t regret it!

Today is Walk Your Dog day. It’s a special day put aside to bring awareness to the increasing problem of canine behavior issues and obesity in America. It’s estimated that at least 75% of dogs in shelters are there due to lack of exercise which resulted in issues such as aggression, destruction, and separation anxiety. The lack of exercise coupled with fatty foods lead to a number of health issues such as pancreatitis, diabetes, heart disease and cancer, which is the number one killer of dogs. More than half of the dogs in this country are overweight or obese, according to a study by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP).

Dogs LOVE going on walks. In fact, they CRAVE it. Most dog owners are familiar with the happy dance of their dogs as soon as they pick up a leash or in many cases, the mere mention of a W-A-L-K. Dog walks allow them to explore the world around them providing mental stimulation and giving them an outlet for their energy.  They get to check out what’s going on in the neighborhood using their sense of smell. Going on dog walks not only releases endorphins for both you and your dog but it will also strengthen your bond with your pet.

My challenge to you is to walk your dog every day for one week. I guarantee that you will see a massive difference in your pet.

Remember…. a tired dog…is a good dog!
